Guinness World Record #2 , For The Paddle Ball King

Ok,

I know it's not juggling, but it is my blog, and if I want to mention something exciting in my life, I will do it here, even if it is just peripherally related to juggling.

As some of you may know, and even participated in, I organized an attempt for a Guinness World Record for "The Most People Controlling Paddle Balls At The Same Time" back in Sept. 3, 2011. Well, I "finally" got my certificate in the mail yesterday to make it "official", only to find out that the record was beaten on Jan 25, 2012 (just recently) at corporate event for Johnson & Johnson in the UK. We set the record at 356, held it for almost 5 months and then they beat it with 412. Kind of sucks to find out about winning a record at the same time as finding out that you no longer hold it! Oh well, I guess that's life in the realm of World Records, I guess. The best thing I can do is attempt to beat it and reclaim my/our record. I have already put the wheels in motion for this to happen. I have applied for and received Guinness' approval for a certified attempt to beat the newly establishes record and reclaim it for its rightful owners. Here is a link to a news story on this...

OK,
Not sure if anyone at all is tuning in at this point. I ended up taking another 6 month hiatus from any entries here. Guinness World Record Paddle Pursuits took over my time and focus for a while there... that is what very little time that I have to spare from being a parent to 2 girls, a husband, and running and agency as well as booking and performing with 2 different acts. Whew!
As we all may be aware of, at this point, the last printed issue of JUGGLE magazine has been published. It is the end of a printed magazine for the US juggling community. They say that it "may" come back at some point, but I seriously doubt it. WIth printed media going the way of the dinosaur, I do not see one ever starting back up, once it is gone. There will be an eZine version that will have some cool features that a printed magazine could never have, but for me personally, I will miss getting a printed "trade or industry" magazine in the mail every so often. For many years, when I was very busy juggling and traveling all over the world and did not attend conventions at all (a period of about 12 years) this magazine was my "only" connection to the IJA and the juggling community at large. I relished every word, every photo and every story.
I must, at this point, give a big shout out to my long time friend and the whole reason that I joined the IJA, Bill Giduz. He was president of the IJA when I first met him as a total "newby" juggler. He not only was the President of the IJA, but he was also the Editor of the "Juggler's World" magazine, which was what the magazine was named before it became "Juggle" and edited by Alan Howard and published by Stan Allen. Bill put in years and years of excellent service asa President and Editor, and for those many hours he put in, I stand up, applaud and thank him.
To be honest, this was my introduction into the magical world of juggling. Having Bill close by, as a friend, afforded me a window into this world and a network of friends that has led me to where I am today. Bill would get the magazines published at a printer here in Charlotte, and he would recruit myself and my first juggling partner to help him stick all of the mailing labels onto the magazines before sending them out. As I had spent a lot of time reading back issues of the magazine and immersing myself into the juggling world, I got to know who the Big Names and Big Stars were in the juggling world. It was very exciting to come across the label of some famous or legendary juggling act and have the honor of knowing that the very magazine that I held and stuck the label on, was going to be in the hands of a famous juggler soon. I often wanted to put little post it notes, saying "Hello" in there to them, but never did. LOL.
So, needless to say, for me, this is yet another "end of an era" in the publishing of a printed magazine. As this blog was actually inspired from a column that used to exist in the old Juggler's World magazine, the ending of Juggle, has caused me to "re-think" and "re-evaluate" this blog. Seems like it may be a good time to bring it back to life... or not. I was never sure how much often it was being read or visited, but it seemed like it has the possibility of being a great resource for where to go and see Juggler/Variety acts as well as when to watch for them on TV.

I was just watching Jeopardy "Kids" version on TV with my daughters, and the question to the answer was "World Juggling Day". Pretty cool. I forget exactly how the answer was worded, but the category was something like "World Celebrations" and the answer was something like "what "World" Day is in mid June and might be celebrated by throwing three torches in the air, or something to that effect.

Ok, I know it is not juggling, but it is pretty cool news. Besides, it is my blog, and if I cannot use it for a little shameless self promotion, that what good is it?

The Big News Is!!!!

I returned just last week from setting the very first Guinness World Record with Paddle Balls. I set the record for the most Paddle Balls done by one person, by doing 7. I have done 8 and 9, but wanted to save a little room to "grow the record" at a later date. It was a great experience and I am very happy to be the first one to put a Paddle Ball record into the Guinness World Record Database. I have a sense that it will be just the first of many. I will attach a few links to video of this event. I will also attach a link to The Paddle Ball King's website, where you can go to the "Blog" section and read the whole story, if you feel so inclined.

I recently had a chance to make the pilgrimage to "jugglers' mecca", the great Enrico Rastelli's grave in the village of Bergamo Italy. I was in Milan setting a Guinness World Record for the most Paddle Balls done by one person, and had the opportunity to make a side trip with fellow juggler, and friend, Aaron Greg. Jake and Marty LaSalle have decided to break up the act after a very successful career. Click here to read the latest story in the NY Times. If you are not already aware, you can also tune into "Circus", a PBS documentary, to see the end of the act, as it happens. The PBS crew traveled and lived with The Big Apple Circus for a year, while the LaSalles were with the show. This ended up being the last tour and the last contract that the twins perform together. It comes on Wednesdays at 9;00PM EST. There is one more week left of two installments. This is a great documentary and I have enjoyed watching the 4 other installments.

$1,000,000.00 donation to the IJA

It was recently announced that an anonymous donor has offered $1,000.000.00 to the IJA. It will come in the form of $50,000 payments annually for 20 years. Of this $50,000: $5000 must be used for the newly established Education programs, $20,000 must be spent annually on enhancing the convention and it must be spent on bringing something new or a new element to the convention and not on normal operating expenses, $25,000 of the annual payment cannot be spent and must go into an interest bearing account and cannot be spent for 20 years. Looks like the IJA's money problems are over for now. Thanks to this donor whoever/wherever you are for saving the IJA's financial woes.

Dexter was a large monster juggler on Sesame Street. According to his performer, Kevin Clash, he was Sesame's "most spectacular failure."

Clash discussed the experience (referring to the character as "Juggles the Juggler") in My Life as a Furry Red Monster:

I puppeteered the head of the character and we found a talented artist named Fred Garbo to do the juggling while squatting under the camera's frame. Talk about tough! Trying to coordinate Fred's actions was next to impossible. Fred was the best, but this was asking too much. We spent most of our time in rehearsal rounding up dropped balls, stumbling over one another, and flubbing lines of dialogue - just try concentrating on what you're saying when you've got balls flying around your head.

A friend of mine from Michigan (Zeemo) was friends and neighbors with a man named Art Stephans who was the president of the Ann Arbor Silent Film Society. Art gave my friend this film which is reportedly the oldest known recording/film of a juggler known to exist. It was filmed in France around 1907 - 1908. My friend has reproduced it digitally and has posted it on youtube for all to see.

I was walking down the street in the Latin Quarter in Paris recently and while passing the many post card and gift shops, this post card literally jumped out at me and it was the only one on the whole rack that I saw. Crazy, I know. Anyway, they only had one of them, so I quickly snatched it up. This provided me with a mission for the next day or two... to find more of these. Where there is one, there are more. After a day and half of searching every post card shop we passed, we finally found a store that had more. I purchased 10 for me and 10 for my friend who was with me. I have a few friends in mind that I am going to send one to. I have a few extras. If anyone out there has a cool juggling related post card that they'd like to send me in exchange for one of these, I'd be happy to trade. Heck, if anyone can even give me a good reason or a good story as to why I should just send them one, I'm all ears. Give your best shot. Hello Folks (if there is anyone who reads this):

First of all, let me apologize up front for not keeping the blog up for the last 3 months. There was a very slow period with juggling news, I got lazy, then I got busy... in addition to realizing how difficult it can be to try and keep up with writing, or blogging on a regular basis. I am going to give this another effort. I am curious as to who and how many folks are actually tuning into here. Please feel free to post comments or sign up as a follower. It is the only way that I have any indication of whether or not people are reading this stuff.

IJA & WJF

This year the IJA's annual juggling convention, which is happening in Sparks NV 7/26 - 8/1 is going to be the week after and in the same geographic area of the WJF juggling convention. The WJF will be holding their event on 7/20 - 7/25 in Las Vegas. I am thinking that this is a great thing for jugglers. I have never really desired to attend a WJF convention for a few reasons. Mainly, cost, time and location. I already attend 1 or 2 juggling festival every year and therefore usually can not afford to take time off from performing to attend even more non paid events. However, the another reason has been the fact that the WJF conventions were a little too strict and stringent with all of their rules combined with the fact that I am more of a fan of performance based juggling and not such a big fan of sports juggling. It appears that the WJF has decided to change the format of their festivals, loosen a lot of the silly rules and to actually open up a competition to artistic or performance based acts. Smart move, I think. Sadly, for me, I am not going to be able to attend the IJA festival this year. I have bookings and family conflicts that will prevent me from attending any festivals in the month of July. But, if I were available and was planning to go to the IJA this year, I would certainly be planning on doing the WJF too. What a great opportunity to do two festivals on back to back weeks, in the same area and, as a bonus, you get to go see some Las Vegas acts while you are there. Of all the years to have to miss a convention, I am sorry that this is the year for me. I wish both organizations the best and I hope that they are both well attended. I can't wait to hear the reports.

A gathering of great juggling talent in Las Vegas...

In going thru some of my old files and images recently, I came across this one that was emailed to me from my juggling partner's brother, Joel Heidtman. I forget the details on the date or specific event where this powerhouse gathering of juggling talent occurred. From what I remember it was for some big corporate gig in Las Vegas where they all worked together. Perhaps someone reading this post will know the details and post them in the comments.

Fast Track To Fame

A new Speed Channel based talent show is looking for novelty/variety acts. Above is a flyer that announces the dates and locations they will be taping. They are looking for acts with "down home attitude and heartland appeal". I spoke with one of the producers recently and it sounds like it might be a good opportunity to get your act exposed to a wide audience as The Speed Channel and NASCAR are quite popular. However, this is new show and therefore I cannot vouch for the quality of the production of how the acts will be presented. I am merely helping the producer out by getting the word out amongst some of the variety performer community. I did not get into discussing a lot of the details from the producer but I imagine that a lote of your questions will be answered by clicking on the title of this entry and going to the show's website. ...got off to a rainy start, but the weather has let up now and the shows are rolling along. I just chatted with Dan Holzman this morning and got his personal report/update on how things are going. Dan reports that now that the weather is cooperating, they are having huge crowds, fun shows and he is having a great time hanging out with all of the other performers. The festival runs through January 31st.

Juggling in an Opera

Hey, what's the sense in having a blog if you cannot indulge in a little shameless self-promotion from time to time?

Tonight is opening night in The Belk Theater of The Blumenthal Performing Arts Center of Charlotte, NC, where I will be juggling with Opera Carolina and The Charlotte Symphony in their production of Pucccini's "La Boheme" (which, by the way, in English is "The Boheme")

This will be my 3rd time performing as a supernumerary (a non singing role) in an opera. I have a number of other juggling friends who have also had this opportunity, as well. If you ever get the chance to do this, I highly recommend that you take advantage of it. There is nothing quite on the scale of Opera and to be a part of something so large is quite exciting and stimulating as a performing artist. Being on such a large stage and juggling amongst a huge cast of beautiful voices with a full symphony orchestra playing in the pit is something that I have only experienced with Opera in my over 20 years performing.

If you happen to live near or close to a professional full time Opera company, make sure that you drop them a call or an email and let their production coordinator know what your skills are and that you are interested in any supernumerary roles that might fit your skill set. You will have a very fun time and an experience that looks pretty good on your resume.

Washington, DC Metro Station on a cold January morning in 2007. The man with a violin played six Bach pieces for about 45 minutes. During that time approx. 2 thousand people went through the station, most of them on their way to work.

After 3 minutes: a middle aged man noticed there was a musician playing. He slowed his pace and stopped for a few seconds and then hurried to meet his schedule.

4 minutes later: The violinist received his first dollar. A woman threw the money in the hat without stopping and continued to walk.

6 minutes: A young man leaned against the wall to listen to him, then looked at his watch and started to walk again.

10 minutes: A 3-year old boy stopped but his mother tugged him along hurriedly. The kid stopped to look at the violinist again, but the mother pushed hard and the child continued to walk, turning his head all the time. This action was repeated by several other children. Every parent, without exception, forced their children to move on quickly..

45 minutes: The musician played continuously. Only 6 people stopped and listened for a short while. About 20 gave money, but continued to walk at their normal pace. The man collected a total of $32.

1 hour: He finished playing and silence took over. No one noticed. No one applauded, nor was there any recognition.

Findings; No one knew this, but:

· The violinist was Joshua Bell, one of the greatest musicians in the world,

· He played one of the most intricate pieces ever written,

· With a violin worth $3.5 million dollars.

· Two days before Joshua Bell sold out a theatre in Boston where the seats averaged $100 each.

This is a true story. Joshua Bell playing incognito in the Metro Station was organized by the Washington Post as part of a social experiment aboutperception, taste, and people's priorities.

The questions raised: "In a common place environment, at an inappropriate hour, do we perceive beauty? Do we stop to appreciate it? Do we recognize talent in an unexpected context?"

One possible conclusion reached from this experiment could be this: If we do not have a moment to stop and listen to one of the best musicians in the world, playing some of the finest music ever written, with one of the most beautiful instruments ever made... How many other things are we missing?

I just read an article in a nearby local paper, The Gaston Gazette, that a son of the famous comedian, actor and juggler WC Fields lives nearby in the small town of McAdenville, NC. I have already contacted the writer of the article to let Mr. Willam Rexford Fields Morris know that we would like for him to come and see our Family Vaudeville Extravaganza this year as our honored guest. I hope that we hear back from him with a positive response.

Anthony opened today in Orlando with Curque's production of La Nouba. For those of you who do not tune into JuggleTalk, Anthony's forum, here are a few posts from the day before and also on opening day...

I start performing tomorrow at downtown Disney in Cirque du Soleil's production "La Nouba." It's a totally different style show than Kooza of course. I am working with a chicken character as my assistant as well as some minor involvement with Les Cons(4 white clowns). My entrance is spectacular, the chicken throws a yellow ball down an elevator shaft, then suddenly you see a ball going up and down, soon I arrive on the lift bouncing the ball.

I am also incorporated into the beginning parade where I'll finally get to use the 3 large balls that I have been working on. It's weird lighting there, so I won't be brave enough to do anything crazy at least for a while. In addition I will juggle a small part in the finale of the show. The show is awesome, I am not just saying that because I work there. It has a party like feel to it and it's just a lot of fun.

The premier kicked ass! Two perfect shows, which is how I like to open. The second was harder than the first because as every seasoned performer knows, one tends to relax after opening having had a show under their belt. But, the second was was actually better! I felt more comfortable but was aware of the possibility of mistakes occurring. Management was extremely happy and called me "the future of La Nouba." that's pretty fantastic when dealing with a corporation as Large as Cirque du Soleil.

For some reason, my hands are cracked open all over the place. It could be because of the extensive rehearsals, and not having time to apply my special hand cream and really let it soak in. But it's quite painful I can tell you. I have two days off now and hope the hands will recover by Tuesday.

Although this has been out for a little while I wanted to mention it here for those who were not aware of it. The Movie "Buskers; For Love or Money - The Story of Street Performers" is available for purchase. In his directorial debut, Mad Chad Taylor, the renowned Venice Beach chain saw juggler, had created a one of a kind documentary that goes deep inside the hidden world of street performers. I have not personally seen this one yet, so I cannot give my own review, but from what I hear it is a decent movie and a good look at the world of Buskers.
